We have a great tale of love for you today, a story which began on board QE2 when two of our guests met during a Transatlantic Crossing to New York.
On 28 July 1987 Michael Osborne boarded QE2 in Southampton with his parents and on the same gangway Heather embarked with her Grandmother and Aunt Norrie.
Michael, from Northampton in England was sailing to New York to celebrate his 18th birthday and Heather from New Jersey, USA was celebrating her High School graduation.
The young couple met in the Club Lido when Michael asked Heather to dance. She later approached him when he was brooding at the back of the ship because he wanted her attention, they hit it off and enjoyed the rest of the crossing together.
After disembarking in New York the pair stayed in contact for years by writing to each other, but then lost contact. Heather started working on Wall Street and Michael stayed in the UK. In 2009 Michael decided to search for Heather online, he found her profile on the US Classmates website and sent her a message. Unfortunately Heather didn’t check the account regularly and replied two years later in 2011! Now, this is where technology gets tricky…Michael was no longer using the same email address and didn’t see Heather’s reply until 2 months later after he’d cleared 3000 unread emails from his inbox! At this point it was Thanksgiving Day 2011 and as Michael describes:
“Miraculously there it was – an inbox message from HEATHER MORAN!!!!!’
The couple spoke to each other daily on facebook, skype and emails and eventually met up in January this year – 24 1/2 years after they last met!
Then on 28 July 2012, 25 years to the day they first met on board QE2 – Michael and Heather got married in Hamlin, Pennsylvania:
Of course, the QE2 had to feature in the wedding – the couple had a table with their keepsakes from the crossing and a collage of their QE2 photos from 1987. Included in the keepsakes was Michael’s cabin key and each guest received a replica key! Some of Aunt Norrie’s jewellery was customised and used in Heather’s beautiful bridal gown.
Heather is now living in the UK with Michael and his two children. The pair haven’t been on a cruise since their meeting in 1987 but Michael’s new father-in-law has promised them a wedding gift crossing on Queen Mary 2 or Queen Elizabeth sometime in 2013.
Thank you Michael and Heather for sharing your story with us! Michael’s quote summarises it perfectly:
“Our marriage – and the union of our two families – is all due to that Transatlantic Crossing.”
