We Are Cunard

Posted in: Queen Victoria

“The Hairy Bikers” are well known for their acclaimed British television series featuring a light hearted mix of cookery and travelogue. Currently travelling on board Queen Victoria is one half of the presenting duo, David Myers. I hope you enjoy reading about some of his experiences so far.

Born in Barrow-in-Furness,Cumbria,  David Myers decided to abandon his motor bike in favour of the Queens Grill on Queen Victoria on an 18 day Adriatic Discovery Voyage taking in the delights of Cadiz, Messina, Cephalonia, Corfu, Dubrovnik, Venice, Korcula, Gibraltar and Southampton.

David told fellow Cumbrian, Hotel Manager David Stephenson how delighted he was by the whole holiday. He said he loved going to the Queens Grill and experiencing great service and marvelous food. He said that he found it hard to believe for an operation of this size, the quality and the great attention and care he and his wife had received while on board.

David was unable to totally relax however, and asked, Queen Victoria’s own culinary superstar and well known native of Yorkshire, Executive Chef Mark Oldroyd to do a VIP Galley Visit. Mark, never wanting to miss a chance to showcase his kitchen was happy to oblige.  David commented to Mark about the warmth of the crew and how everyone he had met all seemed happy to be working for Cunard on Queen Victoria. Mark also asked David if he would like to assist him in the cooking demonstration planned for later in the voyage.  David didn’t say no – so we will see!!

I wasn’t familiar with the Hairy Bikers but they sound like pretty fun fellows. Chef Aldroyd & his team do a fantastic job & their culinary demonstrations etc. are riotously funny & entertaining whilst being educational & informative at the same time, I had a blast watching them back in March 2011.

Well, l was smiling and giggling to myself when Peter blogged that David Myers was on board the Queen Victoria. As avid viewers of their wonderful show and their comical antics shown on cable TV here in Australia, l could just imagine what David would be doing and saying to all onboard. (He is a very funny man !! )

I trust that he will have a ball on the QV as we did almost two years ago.

Met the two “bikers” in the IOM breakfasting on the next table to me.A really friendly pair always willing to meet their public. They were demonstrating at the Douglas Food festival when they could get them away from sampling the Bushy’s Porter. Our two friends are on this voyage so we will get a full report. Our turn for the Vic next year to the Black Sea in Grills.
Peter any news on the refit for the QM2? You said you would let us know what’s being done.

Just got back from our voyage on Queen Victoria and the Ready, Steady, Cook show with Dave Myers and his wife as guests with the chefs was hilarious. They were really good sports and we managed to have a chat one evening and get some photos and he signed my folder which had been given to us holding all the menus. A really fantastic time was had by all and we are already missing it! Back to reality!

Bill – I will be writing a blog in the coming week to let you all know what we have planned for the Quen Mary 2 refit in November. She will be celebrating her 8th Birthday in January – and we will make sure that she is looking at her best. We are not planning a major structural changes but we are doing a very signficant amount of work around the ship to make sure she lives up to the very high expectations that our guests rightly have. I am confident that when our loyal guests return to the ship from December they will be vey pleasantly surprised and feel right at home. Best Regards. Peter

Looking forward to our trips next year on Queen Mary 2. How nice to know it will be looking wonderful. The Carpets on the Victoria in April were vivid with colour, after her refit. Will we be having blogs about progress on the work, as with the Victoria?
